The First Line of Defense: Effective Methods for Flood Protection
1/17/2024 (Permalink)
Remember, in the unfortunate event that flooding does cause damage, our SERVPRO® team is ready to help!
When it comes to protecting your home against flood damage, a combination of preparedness and preventive acts. In our expertise as a leading damage restoration company, SERVPRO of Northern Liberties, we've observed that a few strategies stand out in their ability to provide effective flood defense.
1. Smart Landscaping
Strategically planned and implemented landscaping plays a surprisingly significant role in flood defense. Grading your yard away from your home, planting native plants and trees that withstand water better, and creating rain gardens can help divert and absorb excess water during a flood.
2. Home Elevation
One of the most effective methods for long-term flood defense, particularly in flood-prone regions, is home elevation. Raising your home on piers or columns keeps the living areas above the flood level. While this method can require a higher investment upfront, it can dramatically decrease the risk and cost of flood damage over time.
3. Flood-Resistant Materials
Using flood-resistant materials for low floors – those below flood level – can significantly minimize damage. Concrete, stone, or tile floors, water-resistant wall coverings, and stainless or galvanized steel hardware are excellent choices.
4. Flood Barriers
Flood shields, barriers, or even makeshift sandbags can provide a critical measure of protection against incoming water. Innovative, portable barriers that can be quickly deployed when a flood warning is issued can save valuable time and reduce damage.
5. Backflow Valves
Installing backflow preventers on your sewer system can help protect your home during a flood. These valves prevent sewage from re-entering your home if the sewer system becomes overwhelmed by floodwaters.
6. Reliable Sump Pumps
A sump pump can be an excellent defense against basement flooding. Regular maintenance and a battery backup ensure that your sump pump is ready to remove water even during power outages.
At SERVPRO of Northern Liberties, we recognize that protecting your home from floods can feel like a daunting task. But with these effective approaches, you can significantly enhance your home's defenses and give yourself peace of mind.
Remember, in the unfortunate event that flooding does cause damage, our SERVPRO® team is ready around the clock to provide swift, professional water cleanup and restoration services. We’re committed to making it feel "like it never even happened." One thing is clear: when it comes to flood defense, a proactive approach is your best bet!
Dealing with Water Damage After a Fire: SERVPRO® Tips
11/14/2023 (Permalink)
Dealing with water damage after a fire is a complex process.
Facing a fire in your home is a traumatic experience, but what many people might not realize is that the damage doesn't end with the flames. Water damage often accompanies the firefighting efforts, leaving a double blow to your property. In this blog, we will explore the unique challenges of dealing with water damage after a fire and provide essential tips on how to address this complex situation effectively.
Understand the Extent of Water Damage
Before you can begin the restoration process, it's vital to assess the full extent of water damage in your home. Water can seep into walls, floors, and other structural elements, causing potential long-term issues like mold and rot. A professional inspection can provide a clear picture of the situation.
Begin Drying and Dehumidifying
The longer water sits in your home, the greater the risk of secondary damage. Begin by removing standing water using pumps or wet/dry vacuums. Dehumidifiers and high-velocity fans are essential to speed up the drying process. These measures prevent mold growth and structural damage.
Salvageable vs. Unsalvageable
Sort through your belongings and furniture, distinguishing between items that can be saved and those that are beyond repair. Some items might need professional cleaning and restoration, while others may need to be discarded.
Mold Prevention
Mold thrives in damp, dark conditions. After water damage, it's crucial to take steps to prevent mold growth. Consult a professional restoration service like SERVPRO of Northern Liberties to ensure that hidden moisture pockets are completely addressed and to implement anti-mold treatments where necessary.

Navigating Mold Concerns During Real Estate Deals
10/19/2023 (Permalink)
Mold can have a significant impact on real estate transactions.
In today's article, we will shed light on an important topic that concerns both buyers and sellers in real estate transactions – mold. Mold can be a significant concern for property owners, and it is crucial to understand the role of disclosures and inspections when it comes to mold in real estate transactions. Join us as we explore the importance of mold disclosures and inspections, and provide essential tips to ensure a smooth and transparent process.
1. Understanding Mold in Real Estate Transactions
In real estate, mold can present a potential problem for both buyers and sellers. Mold growth can affect the value of a property and may pose serious concerns for its occupants. Therefore, it's essential for all parties involved to have a clear understanding of mold-related disclosures and inspections to protect their interests.
2. Proper Mold Disclosures
Disclosures are crucial in real estate transactions, ensuring that all parties are aware of any known mold issues before completing the purchase. Sellers have a legal obligation to disclose any known mold problems in the property. This includes previous mold remediation efforts, current or past water damage, or any other conditions that may lead to mold growth. Buyers should carefully review the provided disclosures and seek clarification if they have any concerns.
3. The Importance of Mold Inspections
While disclosures provide valuable information, it is also advisable for buyers to conduct thorough mold inspections as part of their due diligence. Mold inspections help identify any hidden mold issues that may not be immediately visible. Hiring a certified mold inspector or registered industrial hygienist will ensure a comprehensive examination of the property, including air sampling and surface testing. This inspection can provide buyers with peace of mind and a clearer understanding of the property's mold condition.
4. Taking Action on Mold Inspection Findings
If the mold inspection reveals the presence of mold, buyers can explore several options depending on the severity of the issue. They may negotiate repairs or remediation with the seller before closing the deal, or request a reduction in price to accommodate the cost of mold remediation after closing. In some cases, buyers may choose to walk away from the transaction if the mold issue is too significant.
5. Seeking Professional Assistance
Navigating the complexities of mold disclosures and inspections in real estate transactions can be overwhelming. Whether you are a buyer or seller, it is always beneficial to seek professional assistance. Engaging the services of a reputable mold remediation company, such as SERVPRO® of Northern Liberties, can provide expert insights and guidance throughout the process. Their expertise will help ensure that all necessary steps are taken to address mold concerns effectively.
Mold can have a significant impact on real estate transactions, potentially affecting the property value. By understanding the importance of mold disclosures and inspections, both buyers and sellers can have a transparent and seamless experience. Remember, when it comes to mold, knowledge is power. Consider consulting with professionals like SERVPRO® of Northern Liberties to navigate mold-related issues and ensure a successful real estate transaction.
The Ultimate Guide to Restoring Landscaping After Water Damage
10/14/2023 (Permalink)
Water damage can wreak havoc on your landscaping, leaving your lawn and garden in disarray and the soil damaged and unhealthy. With the right information and tools, you can restore your outdoor space to its former beauty. In this guide, we’ll share expert tips and resources to help you revive your lawn, garden, and soil after water damage.
Understanding the Types of Water Damage
Different types of water damage can affect your landscaping in various ways. Depending on the source of the water and how long it was present, you may encounter the following types:
Clean water: This is water that comes from a sanitary source, such as a broken water supply line. Although this type of water contains no harmful contaminants, it can still cause water damage to your landscaping.
Gray water: This contains some level of contaminants, such as from washing machines or dishwashers. It can cause damage to your landscaping, but it poses no immediate health risks.
Blackwater: This is water from sewage or other contaminated sources, which can contain harmful bacteria and viruses. Blackwater poses significant health risks and requires professional cleanup.
Signs of Water Damage on Landscaping
Knowing the signs of water damage on landscaping can help you take action early and prevent further damage. Signs include:
- Patches of wilted or dead grass
- Discolored foliage
- Foul odor
- Mold or mildew growth
- Soil erosion
Steps for Restoring Your Lawn
Assess the damage: Walk around your lawn and look for standing water, mud, and other debris. If the water sat for an extended period, it could have caused soil compaction, which you’ll need to address.
Remove debris and mud: Use a rake or leaf blower to remove any debris on your lawn. Don’t let mud and dirt dry out, as it can become challenging to remove later. If you encounter large clumps, use a spade to cut them into smaller pieces.
Aerating and reseeding: Water can compact soil, making it challenging for grass to grow. Aerate the soil, then reseed with your lawn’s preferred seed type.
Fertilizing and watering: Give your lawn a boost after water damage. Use a fertilizer rich in nitrogen to help with greening and growth. Water your lawn frequently, but not to the point of oversaturation, and ensure proper drainage.
Reviving Your Garden
Remove any debris and mud that accumulated in your garden. Be careful not to damage any plants or flowers. Then, test the pH level of your soil to understand if it requires any treatment. Different plants prefer different pH levels, so it’s essential to adjust accordingly.
Water damage can cause soil to lose its nutrients, so use compost to enhance the soil quality. Once the soil is prepared, replant your garden. Water it frequently, but not excessively, to help plants quickly re-establish their root systems.
Restoring Soil Health
Water can impact soil health negatively, causing it to lose its essential nutrients and complicate the growth of plants and grass. Consult with a professional landscaper to determine the necessary steps to restore your soil health, such as adding soil amendments, using compost, or mulching.
Additional Tips and Resources
- Contact a local landscaper to assess the damage and provide guidance on restoration and prevention measures.
- Avoid walking or driving on a damaged lawn as it can cause further soil compaction.
- Regularly check your gutters and downspouts to ensure proper water flow and prevent water from pooling in your lawn.
Water damage to your landscaping can be a stressful experience, but by following these restoration steps, you can revive and breathe life into your outdoor space. By taking a proactive and informed approach, you can prevent future damage and keep your lawn and garden healthy and beautiful.
Stay prepared with Technology Storm Preparedness and Recovery
9/5/2023 (Permalink)
When it comes to severe weather events like storms, technology has played an increasingly significant role in both preparedness and recovery efforts. From advanced forecasting systems to communication tools, technology has revolutionized the way we approach and respond to storms. In this blog post, we will explore the various ways technology has become an invaluable asset in storm preparedness and recovery.
Advanced Weather Forecasting
One of the most significant advancements in storm preparedness is the ability to accurately forecast weather patterns. Today, we have access to sophisticated weather forecasting systems that utilize data from satellites, radar systems, and weather models. These advancements allow meteorologists to provide more accurate and timely information about impending storms, giving individuals and communities ample time to prepare and take necessary precautions.
Mobile Apps and Alerts
Mobile apps have become essential tools for storm preparedness. With weather apps, individuals can receive real-time updates and alerts about severe weather conditions. These apps provide information about approaching storms, including their intensity, trajectory, and expected time of arrival. Some apps even offer live radar imagery, allowing users to track storms in real-time.
Emergency Notification Systems
Local authorities now utilize emergency notification systems to alert residents about severe weather events. These systems can send automated messages via phone calls, text messages, emails, and mobile app notifications. By signing up for these systems, individuals can receive vital information about evacuation orders, shelter locations, and other crucial details during storm-related emergencies.
Remote Monitoring Systems
In recent years, technology has enabled the development of remote monitoring systems that provide real-time data on various storm-related factors. For example, flood monitoring systems use sensors to measure water levels in rivers and streams. This data can help predict potential flooding and allow authorities to issue warnings and take appropriate actions.
Drones
Drones have become invaluable tools in storm recovery efforts. After a severe storm, drones can be used to survey the damage and assess the extent of destruction in areas that may be inaccessible or unsafe for humans. This information helps emergency responders and insurance agencies allocate resources efficiently and provide timely assistance to affected communities.
Social Media
During storms, social media platforms have become essential means of communication. They allow individuals to share real-time updates, photos, and videos of storm conditions, aiding in situational awareness. Social media platforms also provide a platform for emergency management agencies and organizations to disseminate important information and instructions to the public quickly.
Online Resources and Tools
The internet provides a wealth of information and resources for storm preparedness and recovery. Online maps and interactive tools can help individuals identify evacuation routes, locate emergency shelters, and find nearby resources during and after a storm. Online forums and communities also provide a space for individuals to share experiences, support one another, and find assistance during storm-related emergencies.
Technology continues to play a crucial role in storm preparedness and recovery efforts. Advanced weather forecasting systems, mobile apps, emergency notification systems, remote monitoring technologies, drones, social media, and online resources have revolutionized how we approach storms. By leveraging technology, individuals and communities can stay informed, take necessary precautions, and respond effectively during and after severe weather events. As technology continues to evolve, it is vital to embrace these advancements and incorporate them into our storm preparedness plans, ensuring the safety and well-being of ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities.
Fire Alarm Education for Family Safety: Teaching Children What to Do
8/19/2023 (Permalink)
Fire safety is a paramount concern for every household, and preparing your family for a potential fire emergency is essential for their well-being. Fire alarms play a crucial role in providing early warning and alerting occupants to the presence of smoke or fire. However, merely having fire alarms installed is not enough; educating your children on how to respond to the alarm is equally vital. This blog will guide home and property owners on effectively teaching children what to do when a fire alarm sounds, ensuring their safety and preparedness in the event of a fire.
Make Fire Drills Fun and Informative
To capture children's attention and keep them engaged, turn fire drills into a fun and informative activity. Designate a specific time for fire drills and explain the importance of practicing emergency procedures. Involve the whole family in the drill and assign specific roles, such as a designated meeting place outside the house. Keep the tone positive and encouraging to reduce anxiety and instill confidence in their ability to respond calmly during an emergency.
Demonstrate the Sound of the Fire Alarm
Familiarize your children with the sound of the fire alarm by intentionally triggering it during a non-emergency situation. This practice will help them recognize the sound and associate it with a need for immediate action. Explain that when they hear the alarm, it means they must follow the family's predetermined fire escape plan promptly.
Teach "Stop, Drop, and Roll"
Demonstrate the "Stop, Drop, and Roll" technique to children in case their clothes catch fire. Emphasize the importance of remaining calm and not running, as this could fuel the flames further. Make it a fun exercise, allowing them to practice the technique, so they remember it more effectively in a real emergency.
Practice Crawling Low in Smoke
Teach children the significance of crawling low to the ground in a smoke-filled room. Smoke rises, and the air near the floor is less likely to be as toxic. Get down on their level and explain that crawling helps them find clean air and stay safe until they can escape.
Establish a Safe Meeting Point
Designate a safe meeting point outside the home where the whole family gathers after evacuating. Stress the importance of remaining at the meeting point until everyone is accounted for. This ensures that everyone is safe and accounted for during a fire emergency.
Emphasize Not to Hide
Explain to children that they should never hide under beds or in closets during a fire. Emphasize that the family's priority is to evacuate the house safely, and hiding can make it difficult for rescuers to find them.
Encourage Age-Appropriate Questions
Encourage your children to ask questions about fire safety and address their concerns honestly. Provide age-appropriate answers and explanations, ensuring they feel informed and empowered to take action during emergencies.
Fire alarm education is a crucial aspect of family safety planning. Teaching children what to do when the fire alarm sounds empowers them to respond calmly and efficiently during a fire emergency. By making fire drills fun, demonstrating emergency techniques, and fostering open communication, you can equip your children with the knowledge and confidence needed to protect themselves and others in the event of a fire. Together, as a prepared and educated family, you can prioritize safety and peace of mind in your home.

Did you know that the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade is the oldest Thanksgiving Day parade in the country!
The 1.4-mile 6ABC Dunkin’ Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade is the oldest Thanksgiving parade in the country and a true Philadelphia tradition. The city streets make way for massive floats and giant balloons, plus local performers from choirs, dance groups, marching bands and more. And Santa himself arrives in grand fashion, ushering Philadelphia into the holiday season.
Now in its 98th year, the annual Thanksgiving Day parade promises another visual and celebratory feast. So bundle up, grab the kids or a group of friends and head out for an early holiday treat.
Best Places to Watch
1. One of the best places to watch is at the parade’s finish at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
2. The south side of Eakins Oval (in front of the Art Museum) is also recommended.
3. Other locations along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, like Logan Circle, are also good bets.
4. If you need to warm up, head to the nearby Comcast Building and catch the Comcast Holiday Spectacular on the massive Comcast Experience Video Wall.

Tree fall on your home? Advise & information about what to do

Tree fall on your home? Advise & information about what to do if this happens to you.
With so many recent summer storms trees are falling causing damage everywhere, including homes in Philadelphia! Damage can be significant and there are many homeowners that don't know where to start in this situation. SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmount can help. Here is some information and advise on what to do should this happen to you.
The sudden storms of summer are short and strong. Usually trees don't fall just because they are old. The rain water can become overwhelming in the ground making it soft and tree roots do not hold well in soft, wet dirt. This along with strong wind surges cause the tree to fall, wind pulls the tree right up from the soft ground causing the fall.
If the tree does hit your home there will likely be damage, depending on the size of the tree the amount of damage can vary. Here are the basic steps to take to secure your home:
1. If you are in the home when the fall occurs, immediate walk out-side and visually look at your home for damage. Use an entrance far from the tree if possible. IE: If the main entrance is blocked, go out the back door.
2. Call your local Fire or Police and advise them of the tree fall, sometimes there can be street wires that go down with the tree. If this is a problem the local authorities will help secure the area for safety.
3. Call your Insurance Carrier and report a claim for the damage to your home. Get a claim number and you adjusters contact information. Also make sure they explain the claim process and how your insurance coverage applies in this situation.
4. Call a Tree Company to have the tree professionally removed. Your insurance carrier may assign a company, if not ask for recommendations. DO NOT attempt yourself, this is very dangerous!
5. Call SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmount to begin mitigation of the damage. Also to board or secure areas of the house that is needed. The sooner we begin mitigation the better. Damage can get worse the longer it waits.
6. Once all of this is done, begin looking for a contractor if any reconstruction is needed. SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmount can also help you with this, we one of few SERVPRO Franchises that does reconstruction after mitigation.
At the end of the process we at SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmont will it "Like it never even happened"

Philadelphia Residents: Summer Grill Fire's
8/3/2017 (Permalink)
Spring and Summer is the perfect time of year for a cook-out and grilling dinner. SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmount wants all of our Philadelphia friends to be safe when grilling!
Fire's can be caused easily on a grill; gas grills are known for having a grease fire & charcoal grills can catch fire depending on what you are using to grill with, IE; using wood-chips to flavor the food.
Here is basic safety advise for a grill fire:
When you are grilling make sure there is always a fire extinguisher near-by along with safety goggles and heavy gloves. These are necessary to put out a fire on your grill. Also have your local fire department information. Should a grill fire happen, immediately use the extinguisher, gloves, and goggles to put the fire out. If you are using a gas grill turn the gas off completely. Have a person near-by call the fire department or 911 if you can not control the fire.
Grill Fire's can become large & cause damage to you home or outside deck, SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmount is prepared 24/7 & 365 days a year for emergency services . Call for service at 215-791-2302.

Philadelphia, do you know SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmont provides Content Cleaning Service, Inventory Service and Pack-Out Service?
8/3/2017 (Permalink)
Content to be cleaned after a fire, Already on Inventory List and Photo Report.
Did you know SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmount provides Content Cleaning, Inventory Service and Pack-out’s?
Some people find the Content part of their claim/loss more stressful because of the specifics involved. SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmount can lift that weight for our customers, literally- we also Pack-out the contents!
Content Inventory Service: Affected items are evaluated, documented & photographed to provide a detailed Content Inventory List and Photo Report. Content is evaluated into 3 categories: 1. clean/restore, 2. possible salvage, & 3. total loss/damage beyond repair. All of the affected items are photographed and we note recommendations for specialist, i.e.: Dry Cleaning Service or Electronic Specialist. This information and all items is documented in a detailed Content Inventory Sheet and Photo Report.
Content Cleaning Service: After the evaluation, we move-on to content that can be restored and/or cleaned. Each item will be properly cleaned and restored, including laundering clothing, sheets, etc.. The items for possible salvage and total loss are placed aside or moved as they need to be inspected by the insurance adjuster. After the inspection, we dispose of the total loss items and follow adjuster instruction for salvage items.
Pack-out Service: With a larger loss, sometimes content has to be moved into storage while the rest of the loss/claim is being handled. The same process above is followed, but the content that is restored must be temporally moved into storage. We have storage vendors, including on-site storage (Storage Pod), that we can provide unless a storage location was specifically assigned by your adjuster. After all of the content is cleaned or restored, it will be properly packed into box’s or wrapping and moved into storage. We carefully documented items into a Detailed Pack-out Inventory List. All boxes have a location and number (Kitchen #1, Bathroom #1, etc.) and we document items in each box, this creates the Pack-out Inventory. Large Items are wrapped and listed alone. If you need a specific item or box, it is easily found. After the loss has come to an end, we move the content back to the loss location.
SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmount is prepared 24/7 & 365 days a year for emergency services at 215-791-2302.

What to do with refrigerated items during a power outage
4/25/2017 (Permalink)
Hello from our SERVPRO Spring Garden Family!
Spring & summer thunderstorms approaching. We thought you should know what to do with REFRIGERATED ITEMS should there be a power outage. Here are some tips compliments from American Red Cross on Food Safety:
http://www.redcross.org/get-help/prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/food-safety
1.) Call electric company, advise and in inquire about how long the outage may be.
2.) Keep fridge and freezer doors closed as much as you can.
3.) Food that is over 40°F for longer than 2 hours should be disposed of. Also food that if discolored or has an odor.
4.) Eat perishable foods first: fridge first, then freezer.
5.) Have a cooler and ice prepared if the outrage may be more than 24 hours. Keep it in cool place covered in a blanket or towel.
SERVPRO & THE AMERICAN RED CROSS are close affiliates as both companies enjoy helping those in need during a time of loss. We are proud to have such a great business relationship!

Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage in Philadelphia? Useful Information

Fire, Soot, or Smoke Damage in Philadelphia? Useful Information for Home Owners!
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. Our technicians are IICRC Certified, highly trained, & very experienced in this field. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care. We do go above and beyond to make you home "Like it Never Even Happened"
Soot & Smoke Restoration Services
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action. From there our certified and highly trained technicians can properly begin the mitigation & restoration process.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Spring Garden/Fairmont will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Pipe Break / Water Damage Thank You Letter
NOTE: the end (P.S. Reggie, Marcus & Kimberly were great) got cut off the bottom.
Pipe Break & Water Damage in Philadelphia Home right before a Holiday
2 weeks before Halloween a Philadelphia family had a pipe break and significant water damage in their home. They were scheduled to hold a large children's party on Halloween night. As mentioned many times before, we truly do operate 24/7 & 365 days a year. Below is a wonderful "Thank You" letter we received from this family (who wishes to be anonymous after giving their permission to share on our site.)
Thank You Letter dated 11/02/2016
Dear SERVPRO of Spring Garden,
I want to thank you for your amazing help during my Halloween crisis! If not for your fast response and excellent work my child’s Halloween would have surely been ruined! We were panicked when we found water gushing into our finished basement & did not know what to do.
Thank to your company & recommendation of a excellent plumber, we found that a water pipe burst!
The plumber came out prompt, then your company immediate after. It took only 2 weeks for the entire process to be complete. The plumber fixed our pipe right away, and Your company begun right after he was done to begin drying everything out. Most impressed that you had started to put my walls back, carpets, paint, and so much more right away.
In two weeks our home looked exactly the way it had before! Just in time for my children s Halloween party. This meant so much to me & my child.
I cant thank you enough. We will recommend you ever time a friend of ours is in need!
Sincerely
XXX
PS: Reggie, Marcus, & Kimberly are great, amazing staff & compassionate

Christmas Tree & Lights - Fire Safety Tips for our Philadelphia Family's
11/30/2016 (Permalink)
Philadelphia Fire Hazard, - Christmas Tree! Although a fake tree, still a danger: 1. Close to two heating sources 2. lights on during the night.
Attention our Philadelphia Friends & Family: Avoid a Holiday Fire Disaster!
Did you know that Christmas trees alone result in 13 million dollars, annually, in property damage? More importantly, these fires present real risk towards family, friends, and homes! While having a live tree in your home is a tradition to many & beautiful, beware of dangers and take simple precautions; The combination of tree dryness, electrical malfunction with lights and poorly located heating sources can make for a devastating combination.
BUT IF YOUR HOLIDAY IS JUST NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT A LIVE TREE, FOLLOW THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS TO KEEP THREATS AT BAY:
- Fresh trees are less likely to catch fire, so look for a tree with vibrant green needles that are hard to pluck and don’t break easily from its branches. The tree shouldn’t be shedding its needles readily.
- Always place your tree away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights, and keep the tree base filled with water to avoid a dry-out.
- Make sure all your indoor and outdoor Christmas lights have been tested in a lab by the UL or ETL/ITSNA for safety, and throw out any damaged lights.
- Any lights you use outdoors must be labeled suitable for exterior placement, and be sure to plug them into a ground-fault circuit interrupter protected receptacle.
- Keep all your holiday candles away from your Christmas tree, surrounding furniture and décor.
- Bedtime means lights off! Don’t forget to turn your Christmas tree lights of each night.
When your tree begins to drop its needles, it’s time to say goodbye to your evergreen foliage until next year. So this year, follow our tips to avoid becoming another statistic.
Remember to call SERVPRO of Spring Garden if emergency services are required @ 215-791-2302.

Fire!!!! Tips on what to do in the event of a FIRE for our Philadelphia Residents
11/22/2016 (Permalink)
Tips on the FIRE Do's & Don'ts
What to do: Immediately contact 911, Your Insurance Carrier and your local SERVPRO Professional
- Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
- Blow or brush vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery, drapes and carpets.
- Place old towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
- Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
- If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.
What NOT to do:
- Send garments to ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor. Your local SERVPRO Professional can assist you with professional dry-cleaners to treat the odor.
- Attempt to clean any electrical appliances, TV sets, radios, etc. that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service. Your local SERVPRO can assist you with this as well.

Do You Think Your Philadelphia Home or Business Might Have a Potential Mold Problem?

Mold can present itself within 48 hours. If you think you have a mold problem contact SERVPRO of Spring Garden / Fairmont at 215-791-2302
SERVPRO of Spring Garden / Fairmont Specializes In Mold Remediation
Did you know that microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors? This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.
Here are some Mold Facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If you think your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO or Spring Garden can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today – SERVPRO of Spring Garden / Fairmont - Available 24/7 215-791-2302
